The Life Story

Survivors of the sex trade are clear: We need to close on-ramps into prostitution for those who don’t want to be there, and open exit ramps for those who wish to leave. Movement leaders came to Perennial to ask: how do we elevate these often unheard stories and ensure they lead to action?

Strategizing through the lens of race and gender justice

In partnership with the NoVo Foundation, Perennial drove a multi-year strategic planning process from start to finish, with the ultimate goal of shaping a transformative new approach to opening up new perspectives and solutions in the sex trade.

The voices in the room matter

To center and lift up the wisdom of those with lived experience, we worked closely with an advisory committee of survivors, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, an incredible website developer and nearly 50 organizations who contributed their time and expertise.

Amplifying stories, expanding resources

With this powerful team, we launched the Webby-nominated storytelling website The Life Story (with an in-person screening in Portland) alongside a new portfolio of grants that bring services to affected women and girls — particularly those of color, immigrants and trans women.

Results

Together with our collaborators, we helped to direct a total of $10 million to multiple organizations nationwide — many led by survivors — along with serving hundreds of advocacy organizations with communication tools.

“Working with Perennial was a gift and a joy, and I truly have no idea where our work would have been without their incredible team. They brought unparalleled skill, care, intention, grace, and a deep commitment to women's rights to their work with us, and consistently helped us to translate our visions (no matter how large or seemingly impossible) into concrete strategic action.”
